Soooo I’ve been shopping around for an SV650 and I saw this on my local craigslist. It’s been laid down AND repossessed according to the seller. Sounds sketchy to me but if it’s legit then I might be able to get it for dirt cheap.

If the frame and forks are straight then it should be a pretty simple matter to fix it up and get it on the road again. Also I think the fork is a GSXR swap too so thats a bonus if its not f’d up. I’m just wondering if trying to get it titled will be a pain in the ass
So what does oppo think?

Race bike, otherwise my 10' pole is not long enough to touch that thing.

He repossessed the bike, has not title, and was riding it without said title? Fuck all that. You don’t need that headache.

Don’t do it unless you see the title. Or read Lehto’s list of things to do before buying.

After seeing the ad...not even race bike. To the recycler!

How much would it cost to rebuild like you’re talking about? I picked up an 03 a couple years ago (had less than 12k miles) for $2500. I’d say that you’re going to go through a lot more than $2k worth of pain and suffering getting that one back running...

Track only, yes.
That bike has been stunted based on the flattened tank and the GSXR forks.
I built a GS500 years ago with a GSXR front end and it was nice.. So nice I could.........STTUNT IT! lol
Move on from this bike, even for $500.

That bike is totally not worth $500. Well, if you part it out, you might be able to make $500, but I’d never try to rebuilt that. Trust me on this, I’ve bought more than my fair share of projects I regretted... this you’ll regret, so pass.
hitup www.copart.com if you really want cheap stuff.

Nope. Not worth it, even though it does have the gsxr swap. I’ve owned an sv650, as well as a sketchy race bike, and it’s not worth buying a bike with issues like that.

Don’t touch that bike. Likely massive structural damage on top of all the title shittyness.

It will be all fun and games until you try to get a title and discover that the bike was reported stolen.

Yikes. Just that incomprehensible story about the repo from his buddy’s apartment complex would have me running the other way, never mind the damage to the bike itself. I’d be terrified to meet the seller anywhere but the parking lot of a police station.

I’d pass. Yes it’s a cheap as hell project but with the title issues and the all around sketchy nature of it, I’d wait for something more complete that is title in hand.

If it was legally repossessed then it will have a title. It will be branded either repo or salvage, but it will have one.
I don’t know Ohio title laws, but in Missouri that’s a parts bike that will never legally be on the road again.
I run into things like this commonly, on missouri I’m protected to purchase a vehicle like this for parts with only a bill of sale.
Keep looking and unless you’re prepared to deal with a baggage of paperwork and a ton of cost only buy a bike with a title if you intend to put it on the road. Salvage brand is usually fixable with a couple extra inspections, but you have to have something!

Either take it for parts or maybe a track bike, don’t bother trying to get it on the road.

Stay far far far far far away. If it’s wrecked there could be cracks in the frame, bent forks, bent headstock, etc. Also - his story is phishy. He “repossessed” it from a tenant that was evicted “from his friend’s apartment complex”. Is that even possible? Can you repossess something that was never yours in the first place? The apartment complex would never be the lien holder. If they were, this guy would have the title.
This would be more of a situation where the apartments would have to put a lien on the bike as payment for money owed by the tenant. Again, I don’t know how possible it is but it sounds VERY sketchy.

The parts themselves are worth more than the $500 he is asking. Get the vin number and check with the DMV the status on the bike, you can also check with the local police if its reported stolen.
I’ve rebuilt plenty of SV650s, and a lot of the time its worth it, just a little research on your part to make sure it doesn’t bite you in the rear later.
Make sure the motor isn’t damaged, such as conrod noise. I would start the motor and check for any unusual noise (SV twins do make plenty of mechanical chatter normally). If possible, I would do an oil change or at least ask to pull the oil filter and inspect for any metal shavings or large pieces of metal.
